Silver Thatch Cuff

The Cayman Silver Thatch Palm has held an intricate part in Cayman’s economy for centuries.   Plaiting baskets, stripping strings and twisting strands were all traditionally regarded as woman’s work, which sustained many Caymanian families in past times.

The Silver Thatch Palm was plaited in various styles to make baskets and bags, which were used in every day life.  It was also twisted to make rope, which was exported to Cuba and Jamaica for use at sea.  Known for its strength and saltwater resistance it was a vital commodity and an important aspect of life for many Caymanian households.

Unfortunately modernization has all but erased this tradition.  About a year ago Rachel started learning the craft from a local thatch artisan.  She then incorporated the plaiting into her Silver Thatch cuff design in the hopes of showcasing traditional thatch crafts in a contemporary format.  While plaiting is no longer a sustaining part of Cayman life Rachel hopes that the love for plaiting carries on starting with her Silver Thatch Cuff.
